History of Nkokonjeru Masters Cup
The
Nkokonjeru Masters Cup is a competitive golf tournament organised by
the members of the
Nkokonjeru Lodge No. 9284 in the Province of Middlesex on behalf of
the reigning Master of
the Lodge for his chosen charity and other worthy causes.
This
is a different golf day than any other. We do not raise money from the
participant golfers but rely
on sponsorships from corporations who would prefer to network with our
golfing friends and guests.
For the first three years, the event was heavily subsidised by our sponsors
and in 2008, the event
remained subsidised although by a small amount.
The
event is full of fun and very competitive. There are no raffles or auctions
and we propose to keep
it this way leaving the players with enough time to enjoy the champagne
reception and the
full hospitality of our Lodge.
The
Masters Cup was launched in 2005 by the reigning Master of the Lodge
by W.Bro Ashok
Bhardwaj with 77 players at Batchworth Park golf Club, with a few more
turning up in the evening
for dinner with Barclays Bank treating everyone to the first drink.
The
event was repeated in 2006 at the request of W. Bro Kanti Mistry reigning
Master with nearly
100 golfers and 120 in total for dinner. The Golf Club could not take
more diners
due to lack of space.
In
2007, W. Bro Anup Shah as Master of the Lodge formally approved The
Nkokonjeru Masters
Cup as a Lodge event with the full backing of all the members of the
Lodge with a committee having
the power to take decisions.
In
2007, the Masters Cup attracted 288 golfers and the golfers were spread
over four different courses
with a joint reception at Venue 5 in Eastcote which was attended by
well over 350 people, occupying
the entire building from the forecourt to the beer garden with great
success. The Nkokonjeru
Masters Cup 2007 was the largest single golfing event of its kind in
the UK.
In
2008, the committee decided to move to Foxhills, a more prestigious
single venue and also
reduced the numbers to 188 with a total for dinner of 200. According
to the golfers and dinner guests,
this was the most impressive of all – well organised, very enjoyable,
champagne reception on the
balcony of the 19th Hole with a Steel Band followed by a silver service
dinner.
2008
will also be remembered as Barclays took pride in sponsoring our event
for a large sum and
our Chief Guest was District Grand Master W. Bro Virendra Talwar of
East Africa who especially
travelled to attend our event. We are indebted to him.
History
of Nkokonjeru Lodge
The
first Nkokonjeru Lodge No. 7631 was consecrated in 1959 in a small town
called Mbale in Uganda.
This town was named after a valley in a range of mountains and one of
them was called Nkokonjeru and
that’s where the name of the Lodge has come from. It was The Rippon
Falls Lodge of Jinja No. 6221
which initiated the consecration of our old Lodge.
This
Lodge used to meet in a primary school hall until they built a Masonic
Temple in 1968. This, however,
did not last for very long, soon after Idi Amin came to power, when
the country was thrown into chaos.
In 1971 when there was a rehearsal meeting in progress going on in the
Temple, the soldiers raided the
Temple, looted at the place and confiscated all Lodge regalia, records
and furniture and a year later all
Ugandan Asians were expelled from the county.
In
1987, many of these Asians now settled in the UK decided to re group
the Nkokonjeru Lodge and the same
was done in 1988 with the help of Boston Manor Lodge No. 7157 –
the new Nkokonjeru Lodge No. 9284
was consecrated and now happily meets at the Harrow District Masonic
Centre.
The
new Lodge has 65 members from all walks of life but substantially from
the business and professional
communities. You name a profession, we have it.
